Planting
1.7 million seedlings are to be planted this May and June in numerous sites located west of Quesnel. These will be under plantings within 20- 40 year old lodgepole pine plantations. The primary species will be white spruce and Douglas- fir.
Three contractors have been selected through an open tendering process to plant the units. Four local First Nations have been awarded planting contracts.
Planting openings:
1,747,672 trees

Brushing
Numerous 20- 40 year old plantations (the current focus of the FFT program) have well developed brush layers, typically composed of alder. This alder is being manually cut as a site preparation treatment. This activity will increase the number of quality planting spots, improve sight lines for planters, increase the mobility of planters on these sites, decrease the risk of eye injury for planters.

Surveys
Planned for 2008 are 10,000ha of silviculture surveys in 20- 40 year old plantations of lodgepole pine. These stands have been severely impacted by the Mountain Pine Beetle to the extent that 60-80 % of the crop trees have been killed. Natural regeneration levels in these stands are variable. These surveys will determine the level of beetle mortality, natural regeneration infill, vigour, and the extent of Non- Satisfactory Restocked (NSR) areas. These surveys will also collect other site data that will support treatment prescriptions (eg. site preparation, planting).
Until May 8, 2008 there is an opportunity to bid on four multi- year survey contracts:
1- Ques2008/10-1: 1738ha (2008), 1500-2000ha (2009), 1500-2000ha (2010)
2- Ques2008/10-2: 2666ha (2008), 2500-3000ha (2009), 2500-3000ha (2010)
